Story Behind the Art:

The art of handcrafting metal sculptures has been passed down for generations, providing a sustainable living for artists and their families in Haiti. The process begins with a recycled 55-gallon steel drum. After the top is removed, the barrel is stuffed with dried banana leaves and straw, which are then ignited to burn off any residue and paint. Once the barrel cools, it’s flattened into a sheet, and the artist uses a hammer and chisel to carve the design by hand.
