From the Cretan Larder to Your Garden
The Cheese Jar is one of Crete's most distinctive and charming traditional pottery forms. Wide-bellied and low-slung with a broad open mouth, this shape was originally used to store and age cheese in the cool stone larders of Cretan farmhouses — its generous proportions allowing air to circulate while keeping contents cool and protected.
Today, the Cheese Jar makes a wonderfully characterful garden pot or decorative accent. Its squat, rounded form is unlike any other Cretan shape, and it sits beautifully at ground level, on a low wall, or grouped with taller jars for a layered Mediterranean display. Plant it with trailing succulents, herbs, or seasonal colour, or simply let it stand as a sculptural piece in its own right.
Each jar is hand-thrown in Crete, Greece using traditional techniques and fired in kilns fuelled by olive pits. No synthetic materials are used at any stage.
